Gold Medal For Lemmers; Shumaker Takes Bronze (1-16-09)

Lemmers scored the deciding point on an escape with :28 seconds remaining
in the match, defeating B.J. Hesse of Tri-County, 6-5, for the championship
in the 125 weight division of the Syracuse Pin Tournament.
Lemmers, who never trailed, scored first on a takedown with just :16 seconds
left in the first period and had a lead as large as 4-1 with :35 remaining
in the second period. Heese tied the match at 5-5 with :43 seconds left
before Lemmers scored the crucial point moments later.
“I feel stronger now that I’m at weight,” said Lemmers,
“I don’t have to cut weight now.” The talented junior
ran his record to 13-5 while Hesse’s mark dropped to 15-3.
Behind 4-1 entering the final period, senior Bill Shumaker reversed Mike
Sloboth of Ashland-Greenwood then pinned the Bluejay (3:35) in the consolation
finals to claim the bronze medal in the 145 weight class. With the victory,
Shumaker improved his season record to 8-3.
Fourth place medal finishes were turned in by sophomore Zach Knisley,
who went 2-2 on the day, and freshman Steihl Reeves, 1-2.
