Lincoln
Christian Defeats Lions, 3-1
(9-29-11)
After
Lincoln Christian Parent’s Night activities, recognition of the
1986 and 1991 State Champions and a 13 minute delay after the second warm-up
period and the start of the match, the Louisville Lions and Lincoln Christian
got down to playing volleyball with the Crusaders claiming a 3-1 victory
over the visiting Lions.
In set one, the Lions started slowly but eventually tied the game at 9-9
on a McKenna Zahn ace serve. But Lincoln Christian outscored the Lions
14-3, which included an 8-0 run, to take control of game one. The Crusaders’
Taylor Workman ended the game with her third kill of the set as Lincoln
Christian won game one, 25-17.
LHS fell behind 11-5 early in game two before turning things around. Louisville
finally tied the game at 15-15, combining two Natalie Minchow kills, a
Maddie Shepard ace, a Tori Dean kill and six Crusader errors. The Lions
were able to grab and maintain a lead to as many as five at 21-16 after
a Morgan Dittberner block. The persistent Crusaders hung around, eventually
tying the game at 24 before the Lions scored on a Lincoln Christian bad
set then won the game on a resounding Dittberner kill.
Lincoln Christian scored a 25-18 game three victory in a set that saw
a combined 22 errors by both teams. Louisville drew to within three points
at 20-17 on a Dittberner block but the Crusaders recorded three kills
in their final five points to escape with the win.
Game four began with Lincoln Christian’s Alayna Kavanaugh on the
serving line as the Crusaders took a surprising 12-0 lead, four of the
points coming off of aces by the junior setter/hitter. The Lions got as
close as six points at 17-11 but Kavanaugh returned to the line late in
the game to add two more aces as Lincoln Christian claimed the 25-13 win.
“We’ve got some work to do,” said Louisville head coach,
Marge Davenport. “We need to work on our offense; we just couldn’t
get points to the floor. Sometimes, we get down if we can’t pass.
We need to learn to work our way out of it.”
The Lions have a week to iron out these problems before hosting Yutan
and Fort Calhoun in a triangular next Thursday, October 6. Start time
is set for 5:00 p.m.
