Coughlin, Winkler, Relay Qualify for State (updated, 5-14-11)

Kaitlin Coughlin, Jack Winkler and the girls 4x400 relay will be representing Louisville High School at the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships next week as a result of their efforts at the Class C-1 District held at the Yutan High School oval.

Entering the finals of the triple jump in third place, one position out of qualifying, Coughlin won the triple jump with a pressure-packed leap of 33’ 3” on her last jump of the competition.

“I’ve finished in third place the past three years,” said a relieved Coughlin. “It’s nice to break that streak.” The top two finishers in each individual event automatically qualify for the state meet. Kaitlin will compete at the state meet at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Joining Coughlin in Omaha will be freshman distance sensation Jack Winkler, who placed second in the 3200 with a personal best time of 10:45.1, less then nine seconds off the pace established by North Bend Central senior, Eric Kloke. The 3200 will be run on Friday beginning at 11:40 a.m.

Louisville had to wait two days for the girls 4x400 realy team to officially make it to the state meet. Finishing second at district in a time of 4:18.2, Kristin Brandstrom
, Sydney Stander, Taylor Zaracki  and Coughlin had to wait until the completion of two delayed districts before seeing their name on the list of additional qualifiers.Their time, second fastest in school history, was one of five added to the state meet.

A noteworthy performance was turned in by freshman hurdler Sterling Reeves who placed third in the 110 highs and the 300 intermediates, both in personal best times, but just a tenth of a second away from second place and a state meet bid.

The LHS girls team finished in the middle of the pack, placing fifth in the nine school field while the Lions boys squad ended in seventh place.
