Gold Again For Lemmers; Hopkins Medals Twice (5-22-10)

After joining the elite list of Louisville athletes earning state meet gold medals with his performance in yesterday’s 3200, Dallas Lemmers aligned himself with a great LHS athlete from 25 years ago by winning the 1600 in a time of 4:29.813 on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Lemmers became just the second Louisville High School athlete to earn two individual gold medals in the same state meet, matching the performance of Louisville's Kathy Gottberg, winner of the Class C shot and discus in both 1984 and 1985.

“My dream was to get a gold medal so I could have my picture on the wall,” said Lemmers about the LHS photo gallery honoring athletes who make All-State, win gold medals or win team championships. “I wanted to be up there with the other outstanding Louisville athletes.”

Lemmers earned his second gold medal of the weekend with another strong kick to the finish, defeating Tyler Bodlak of Wakefield after the duo jockeyed back-and-forth throughout the final two laps.

“I hoped to stay in the top three at the beginning but decided to take the lead,” said Lemmers. “In the last 400 meters, I had a lot of energy left... it was nice to have that extra kick.” Every ounce of zip was needed as Lemmers defeated Bodlak by just over a second while establishing a new school record, previously held by Chris Briggs since 1986.

Avery Hopkins joined in the fun by placing seventh in the 100 in a time of :11.353 then followed with a career best :23.004 showing in the 200, good for a sixth place medal. Hopkins also long jumped 19” 1”, placing 20th.

Carlee Derby started the Saturday morning session for the Lions by running the 800 in a time of 2:57.391, a great experience that will serve the freshman sensation well.

The 27 team points earned by the Louisville boys squad allowed the Lions to finish in a tie for seventh place with Tri County. The Class C title was won by Hastings St. Cecilia with a total of 56 points.
