Lemmers Strikes Gold, Relay Medals in First Day Action (5-21-10)

Louisville’s Dallas Lemmers is the 2010 Class C State Champion in the 3200 meters!

The Louisville distance star led throughout the early part of the race before Dillon Eckel of Gibbon took over during lap six. The sophomore maintained the pace, even taking a 15 meters advantage into the final lap.

But Lemmers stuck to Eckel, reeling in the Gibbon ace at the final curve and outsprinting Eckle the final 100 meters for the win. The 3200 victory, in addition to bettering his own school record in a time of 9:44.82, kept Lemmers’ unbeaten during the ten meet 2010 campaign.

“I knew I could do it,” said a happy Lemmers after breaking the tape and celebrating with LHS fans at the Burke High fence line near the finish. “I had the best time coming out of districts.”

“But I wasn’t sure what was going to happen,” continued Lemmers, especially after Eckel took the lead. “I felt good and wasn’t sore at all in the end. This is the best feeling I’ve ever had.”

Earlier in the day, Lemmers’ blistering final leg propelled the Lions’ 4x800 relay team to a seventh place finish in a time of 8:30.2, the second best time in Louisville track history. Lemmers took the baton in 14th place and passed seven opponents to gain medals for teammates Daniel Studey, Colton Dean and Paul Drelicharz.

Louisville sprinter Avery Hopkins qualified for the finals with a :11.47 showing in the 100 meter prelims. Hopkins placed third in his heat but was one of the top two third place finishes, boosting the recent LHS grad into Friday afternoon’s finals. Hopkins also participated in the 200, but failed to qualify in a time of :23.01, a career best showing.

Sydney Stander, sophomore distance star, placed 19th in the 3200 in a time of 13: 18.779 in her first taste of state meet action.

The Louisville boys team ends the first day of action with 12 points, good for a fourth place tie with Tri County. Hastings St. Cecilia leads the Class C race with 18 points.
