LHS Boys Finish Third, Girls are Fourth at ECNC (5-1-10)

The Louisville boys and girls teams each scored 76 points at the annual East Central Nebraska Conference Track and Field Meet resulting in a third place finish for the boys and a fourth place showing for the girls.

Again, the LHS boys were led by Dallas Lemmers, as the senior distance specialist racked up gold in the 3200 and the 1600, the later in a time of 4:38.8, just 1.4 seconds off the ECNC meet record set by Brad Nick of Cedar Bluffs in 1980.

Lemmers led from wire-to-wire, bursting out from the pack from the start to register an 80 meters lead at the half way point where his time of 2:08 would have been good for first place in the open 800. The 3200 victory was just as dominating as Lemmers claimed his seventh straight 2010 win in an undefeated 2010 season.

Senior sprinter Avery Hopkins added to the gold medal harvest despite battling a slight injury which forced him to drop out of the 200. Hopkins won the 100 in a time of 11:5 in one of the closest finishes of the meet.

While the wins by Lemmers and Hopkins were not surprising, the discus victory by Shelby Hrabik came out of the blue. The freshman discus thrower won her specialty, tossing the discus 111’ 3” on her second throw of the finals to capture the gold medal.

Prior to her ECNC championship, Hrabik’s only team point came four days ago when she placed sixth at the Fort Calhoun Invite with a throw of 96’ 7”, a toss that represented a 29’ 4” improvement over her previous personal best. Shelby then added an additional 14’ 8” to claim the ECNC title.

“I’ve really begun to practice hard the past two weeks,” said a happy Hrabik, still smiling an hour after her victory. “Now I want to get the school record.” The winning ECNC throw ranks fifth on the all-time Louisville High School record board which is topped off by Kathy Gottberg’s 163’ 5” toss in 1985.

Louisville’s next action is next Friday, May 7 at the Johnson County Invite. “The kids said their legs weren’t as strong today,” said LHS head coach, Chase Rasby. “We’ll keep that in mind for the JCC Meet next week while focusing on districts the following week.”
