C4 Places Second at ECNC (9-24-11)

Conestoga 3 , Cass County Central 1
Conestoga’s Brooke Murdoch was a one-woman wrecking crew as the Conestoga Cougars claimed the East Central Nebraska Conference championship with a 3-1 victory over Cass County Central.

The Crush jumped out early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning by combining a Heather Hauschild double with a Malanie Gist RBI single.

But Murdoch delivered a 2 RBI triple in the third inning and an RBI double in the fifth frame to account for all the Cougar scores.

Cass County Central had opportunities to score, placing a runner in scoring position in the third and sixth innings, even loading the bags in the fourth inning but the Conestoga defense tightened and Mudoch, a returning Class C, Second Team all-stater, was tough under pressure.

The Crush, entering the final week of the regular season, will take their 12-9 record into a Monday contest at Ash Grove Field against Wahoo, ranked third in Class C by the Omaha World-Herald.

Cass County Central 7, Johnson County Central 2
Cass County Central defeated Johnson County Central, 7-2, in the opening round of the ECNC tourney.

The Thunderbirds scored in the top of the first inning but Crush lead-off batter, LeighAnn Novotny matched that by lacing a solid single, advancing to second on a passed ball, then stealing third and home to knot the score at 1-1.

The Crush broke the tie in the third inning when Heather Hauschild singled, stole second then advanced to third on a Malanie Gist ground out. Lauren Stohlman’s two-out single scored Hauschild and Abbie Tlustos followed with an RBI double to make the score 3-1.

Cass County Central upped their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Novotny and a run-scoring ground out by Hauschild. After the T-Birds tallied in the sixth, C4 answered with two runs with Hauschild and Gist each recording an RBI, making the final score of 7-2.

LeighAnn Novotny picked up the victory, allowing three hits while striking out six.
