Crush at Arlington Trny (9-17-11)

D.C. West 6, Cass County Central 2
D.C. West displayed their prowess at the plate while defeating Cass County Central, 6-2, in the opening round of the Arlington Softball Tournament.

The Crush had jumped out to a 1-0 when Lauren Stohlmann singled, then advanced to second on an Abbie Tlustos sacrifice bunt. A Carlee Derby single moved Stohlmann to third where she scored on another sacrifice bunt, this one by Cody Meyer.

That tenuous lead held until the Falcons flexed their muscle in the third inning when D.C. West scored four times, the big blow being Sadie Bolze’s two-run home run over the short center field fence.

The Falcons scored twice in the fifth on a two-run homer by Lotte Sjulin. The Crush answered with single tally in the sixth. Stohlmann led off with a walk, advance to third on a fielder's choice and a stolen base then scooted home on a Meyer ground out, making the score 6-2.

But that was all the Crush could muster as D.C. pitcher, Krista Schneider, set C4 down in order in the seventh.The senior ace struck out just two C4 batters during the game but effectively used her off-speed pitches and a tight Falcon defense to hold Cass County Central to three hits in the contest.

Cass County Central 3, Lincoln High 1
Cass County Central scored a 3-1 victory over Class A Lincoln High School in consolation bracket play at the Arlington Softball Invite.

The Crush scored twice in the second inning when Lauren Stohlmann was hit by a pitch, stole second base then scored on Carlee Derby’s solid double to left field. Later, Derby scored on a passed ball after a Cody Meyer’s sacrifice bunt.

C4 added another run when Heather Hauschild beat out a bunt single, stole second then advance to third on a wild pitch by Lincoln High pitcher Emma Rathe. Malanie Gist’s sacrifice fly to deep center drove in Hauschild as the Crush upped their lead to 3-0.

Lincoln High bunched two hits and a Crush error in the fifth inning to score their only run of the game and threatend to add more in the seveth frame, putting runners on first and third with one out. But a Crush double play ended the game with Cass County claiming the 3-1 victory.

Sophomore lefty LeighAnn Novotny allowed two hits to earn the win, striking out five while walking three Links.

Omaha Benson 10, Cass County Central 0
Omaha Benson’s Tashiana Coffiel-Nelson led the Bunnies to a 10-0 win in the third and final contest for Cass County Central.

The sophomore shortstop was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs for the Benson team which ran their record to 8-6.

Errors plagued Cass Count Central as Crush sophomore Cody Meyer pitched four innings, giving up six runs, five of which were unearned.

C4 hosts the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays on Monday with the JVs set to begin at 5:00 with the varsity scheduled to begin at 6:30 at Ash Grove Field.
