Bluejays Blast Crush (9-19-11)

Ashland-Greenwood used strong pitching, timely hitting and a shakey C4
defense to upset Cass County Central, 12-3, on the Ash Grove Field.
The Bluejays (6-11) erupted for four runs in the top of the first inning
when the first three Ashland-Greenwood batters recorded hits. Another
Bluejay hit and three Crush errors aided in the early 4-0 deficit.
Cass County Central scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of
the first inning on one hit, a single by Malanie Gist, and three Bluejay
miscues as the Crush scored three runs to get back within grasping distance.
But the three Ashland-Greenwood first-inning blunders were the only misfires
of the game as the Bluejays settled down and played solid defense behind
sophomore pitcher, Kelsey Gonzales. The Bluejay offense continued to roll,
highlighted by a three-run home run by Bailey Toovey in the second inning.
Ashland-Greenwood tallied three unearned runs in the third and a pair
of runs in the fourth on a Logan Finkey single to account for their dozen
runs.
Sophomore pitcher LeighAnn Novotny suffered the loss, giving up five earned
runs in her two innings of work. Heather Hauschild came on to pitch the
final three innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five
Bluejays.
The Crush (10-7) travel to Bennington to take on Class B’s top-ranked
Badgers, who enter the game with a 17-0 mark.
