Cougar
Eruption Dooms Lions in 31-6 Loss (9-9-11)
Conestoga
scored 17 points in a five minute span, turning a 7-0 lead into a 24-0
mountain to climb as the Cougars went on to defeat Louisville, 31-6.
The Cougars (2-0) opened scoring midway through the first quarter with
a nine play 36 yard drive, culminating with a Nathan Weatherby two yard
plunge. Jerry Heylman’s kick made the score 7-0 where it remained
until late in the second period.
That’s when the Conestoga outburst began. Set up by a nifty 48 yard
scamper by Stephen Flowers to the Louisville seven yard line, where the
Lions’ defense stiffened, forcing the Cougars’ Heylman to
boot a 29 yard field goal with just 14 seconds left in the half.
On Louisville’s first possession of the second half, Conestoga added
to their lead with a 26 yard interception return by Flowers just 2:13
into the period. Then, after forcing a Louisville punt, put together a
44 yard, three play drive ending on another Weatherby short burst, with
7:11 remaining in the third quarter.
The 17 point eruption put the score at 24-0 until Flowers scored on a
63 yard sprint with 2:47 left in the game. Flowers, a senior running back,
unofficially accounted for 152 yards on the ground on just four carries
for the night.
Louisville avoided the shut out by putting together a five play, 62 yard
drive. Sophomore running back rushed for 58 of those yards before Jake
Zyla bulled in from the two yard line with 1:30 left. A successful onside
kick gave the Lions one more possession but a Cougar interception ending
the threat as Conestoga ended the game with a 31-6 victory.
The
Lions ended the game with 134 yards of total offense led by Deloske's
65 rushing yards. Defensively, senior Jake Snodgrass recorded 13 total
tackles on two solo stops and 11 assists. Linebacker Devin Norris was
close behind with one solo and 12 assisted tackles.
"Overall I was pleased with our young men and their commitment to
keep playing hard," said Lions head coach Nick Bausch. "We were
challenged throughout the game by adversity and we kept competing. Conestoga
is a good football team that played a more aggressive game than we did."
"Our
execution and intensity were not where they needed to be," continued
Bausch. "However, I believe that we learned something about who we
are and who we need to be and I think that this game is an experience
we can build upon."
Louisville will take a 1-1 record into their home game next Saturday at
Nebraska Wesleyan where the Lions play host to Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer
at 7:00 p.m. The Titans bring an 0-2 record into the fray after losses
to Tri-County and Wilber-Clatonia.
