Knights
End LHS Season (10-20-11)
Two
quick scores by Fremont Bergan left an uphill battle for Louisville as
the Knights eventtally earned a 48-12 victory over the Lions. The loss
ended the LHS season with a 2-6 record while Bergan will enter the state
play-offs for the tenth consecutive year despite a 3-5 mark.
Bergan’s Matt Sleister took the opening kickoff 78 yards to pay
dirt then, after the Knights’ defense held the Lions on their first
possession, scored on a 39 yard pass from Ryan Batenhorst as the Knights
jumped to a 14-0 lead.
The visitors scored twice more before Louisville got on the board when
Colton Meisinger hauled in a Mitch Petersen pass for a six yard touchdown,
making the score 28-6, providing encouragement as the Lions entered the
mid-game break.
“We felt really good going into halftime,” said Louisville
head coach Nick Bausch. “We were down three scores and we had started
to move the ball. We felt if we could eliminate some of our first
half assignment breakdowns we could put ourselves in a position to win.”
But Bergan scored on their first third quarter drive, culminating on a
Batenhorst 3 yard plunge to make the score 34-6 before Skyler Deloske
answered with an 89 yard scoring run but the Knights tallied twice in
the fourth period for the final margin.
“Overall I was pretty pleased with how our kids played,” said
Bausch. “We just gave up too many big plays to stay in the
game. It wasn't exactly the way we wanted our season to end but
we are certainly proud of the effort of our team.”
Defensively, the Lions were paced by Andrew DeBrie’s 3 solo tackles
and 6 assists while Jake Snodgrass chipped in with 1 unassisted tackles,
6 assists, 1 sack and 2 fumble recoveries. Senior Jake Zyle accounted
for 8 unassisted tackles. Deloske ended the game as the top LHS rusher,
running for 126 yards on 17 carries while Petersen connected on 3 of 6
passes for 39 yards and the Meisinger touchdown.
