Strong Second Half Earns Win For LHS (9-23-11)

Louisville outscored Brownell-Talbot 18-0 in the second half, breaking a 16-16 halftime tie in route to a 34-16 victory over the Raiders in the first district game of the season for both teams.

The Lions scored 10 of those points in just 34 seconds of the third quarter to take a 26-16 lead. LHS took their second drive of the second half 64 yards, culminating with a 3 yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Skyler Deloske while chewing up 7:38 off the clock and keeping the pass-happy Raiders off the field.

On the following B-T possession, two incomplete passes and a quarterback sack by Louisville’s Pat Cleary forced the Raiders into a punting situation. When the snap sailed over Pedro Castro’s head into the end zone, the Lions were awarded a safety and a 26-16 lead.

Due to the safety, the Raiders kicked off to the Lions who scored on another 64 yard, 13 play drive ending with quarterback Mitch Petersen diving for a one yard touchdown to end all scoring with the LIons on top 34-16.

The game started with a decided Louisville advantage when Brownell-Talbot fumbled on the first play of the game. The Lions recovered and scored three plays later on a 15 yard run by Deloske.

Brownell-Talbot answered with a 38 yard Castro field goal then scored two TDs to take a 16-8 lead. But the lead was short-lived as the Lions’ Deloske returned the ensuing kick-off 90 yards to knot the score with 5:12 remaining in the half setting the stage for Louisville’s second half heroics.

"Friday night's victory over Brownell Talbot was a big win for our program. We didn't play a very good first half," said Louisville head coach, Nick Bausch. "We had too many missed assignments and penalties that hurt us and we didn't respond to them very well. However, to the credit of our young men, they came out after halftime and showed some real determination in taking control of the line of scrimmage and putting the game away. Our backs ran extremely hard this week and the offensive linemen should also be very proud of their second half performance. As a team we are excited to get the win, but I think we realize that we need to become more consistent and put together four quarters of good football."

Louisville’s Homecoming Week begins Monday, highlighted by the Oakland-Craig/Louisville matchup on Friday. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 at Ralston High School.
