Prayer is Answered; Lourdes Wins, 19-14 (8-29-08)

A desperation 41 yard heave from Nebraska City Lourdes’ Ben Fedoris to Andy Fedoris gave the Knights a dramatic opening season 19-14 win over the Louisville Lions.

The rainbow pass was tipped from one hand to the other by Fedoris before settling into the arms of the junior wide receiver as he fell into the end zone with the buzzer ending the game, setting off a wild Lourdes celebration.

The final play was set up when an errant snap went over the head of punter Jesse Abbott with just :05 seconds remaining in the game. Abbott was able to retrieve the ball but time remained for the Knights’ Hail Mary touchdown pass.

The Lions had taken a 14-13 lead on a one yard sneak by junior quarterback Adam Sparks with just 3:58 remaining in the game. Each team had two additional possessions but it was the Nebraska City Lourdes squad benefiting the most with their final, last-second play.

The loss ruined a strong debut for junior running back, Dallas Lemmers, who zigzagged over the new Nebraska City Field Turf gridiron for 152 yards on 37 attempts, including a 36 yard touchdown run that gave the Lions a second quarter 8-7 lead.

Defensive performances of note were turned in by Abbott and Pat McAndrews, credited with 12 and 11.5 tackles, respectively.

“We proved a lot of things to a lot of people tonight,” said Louisville head coach, Wally Johnson. “Most important, we proved a lot to ourselves.”

“I felt we did a great job up front and our backs ran hard and made great reads,” Johnson continued, “We’re very proud of the kids efforts and their ability to respond to adversity. Our defense was solid with the exception of 2 plays and our offense controlled the line and moved the ball well. Our coaches did a great job preparing our kids for this week and our kids did a great job executing their jobs”

The Lions will now prepare for their home-opener against the Malcolm Clippers next Friday with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
