Know
Your Foe:
The Trojans have a 21 game winning streak, currently the longest in the
state, tacking on 8 victories in 2007 to it’s 13-0 mark of a year
ago.
Wakefield is again led by quarterback Joel Nixon, last year’s Huskerland
Prep's C2 Player of the Year after being named the C-2 All-State quarterback
by the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal-Star.
Nixon has completed 34 of 67 passes for 759 yards and 9 touchdowns with
just one interception while rushing for 487 yards on 67 attempts. Nixon
is not just an offensive threat having recorded 5 interceptions from his
safety spot. An all-around athlete, Nixon finished fourth in last spring’s
State C Track Meet in a time of :51.338, after registering a time of :50.7
at districts. This past summer, Nixon pitched and played infield for the
Senior Legion baseball team which finished as state runner-up.
Nixon has completed passes for touchdowns to six different receivers led
by Chad Clay, a sophomore, who has 237 yards on 7 receptions and senior
Colby Henderson, whose 9 receptions have accounted for 206 yards. Each
has scored 3 touchdowns.
Ian Miner, a 5’ 8”, 165 pound junior, leads the Trojans' balanced
rushing attack with 649 yards, including 116 in the 14-6 victory over
previously unbeaten Laurel-Concord last Friday night.
The Trojans’ Ryan Klein is the beneficiary of many Wakefield misdirection
plays. The 5’ 11”, 175 pounder, is a speedster who scored
from 58 yards just before half-time of the Laurel-Concord game, giving
the Trojans a 7-0 lead and momentum at the break. Klein is a Wakefield
trackster, with the speed and strength to qualify in both hurdle events
at the 2007 state meet.
Wakefield lost two, huge, all-state linemen from last year’s team
to graduation so this year’s squad has featured toughness, finesse
and quickness. The Trojans’ offensive and defensive lines are led
by Dusty Rhods, the largest at 6’ 4” and 205 pounds, and Zach
and Jake Blessing, a pair of 5’ 10” juniors weighing 180 and
185, respectively.
