75 yard touchdown run was a thing of beauty but just as important
was the heads-up play on the first field goal attempt in overtime.
No panic shown by this seasoned veteran. |

Overtime Field Goal Scores Win for Lions, 10-7
(9-28-07)
Tyler
Johnson’s 34 yard field goal in overtime gave the Louisville Lions
a 10-7 Homecoming win over the Weeping Water Indians.
With the game tied 7-7 at the end of regulation, Louisville won the toss,
electing to play defense first in the overtime period.
Beginning on the 10 yard line, the Indians drove the ball to the three
but their final attempt to score, a lob pass to the southeast corner of
the end zone was intercepted by senior defensive back, Matt Drelicharz.
“I knew what they were going to do,” said Drelicharz, who
had a tremendous break on the ball. “They were running tight end
dumps all night long. I thought they would try the lob.”
With Weeping Water failing to score, the Lions elected to immediately
go for the win, sending Johnson and the rest of the field goal squad onto
the field for a 17 yard attempt.
With Louisville parents, students and supporters waiting to celebrate,
Lions fans gasped as the snap was high, upsetting the timing of the kick.
But Nico Lemmers knew enough to fall on the ball, knowing that the Lions
had three more tries for the win.
“I’ve watched and played a lot of football, so I knew what
to do,” said Lemmers. “The coaches always remind me that falling
on the ball is an option, especially since we were kicking on first down.”
With new life, the next snap by Justin Schram was accurate, the hold by
Lemmers was precise and Johnson’s kick was perfect as the Lions
won their second consecutive game by way of a Johnson field goal and third
straight overall, improving to 3-3 on the year.
Two hours earlier, it didn’t look so good for the Lions when, on
the Indian’s first possession, quarterback Joel Haveman lofted a
44 yard scoring toss to his senior tight end, Jake Nutter, just three
minutes into the game.
But Louisville’s defense led by Sean Ronnfeldt, Jeff Vlasnik, Justin
Schram and Jesse Abbott, rose to the challenge by keeping the high scoring
Indians, who came into the contest averaging 38 points a game, off the
scoreboard the remainder of the evening.
The 7-0 Weeping Water lead held up until late in the third quarter when
Lemmers burst through the middle of the Weeping Water defense, broke to
the south sideline, sidestepped an Indian defender at the 30 yard line
and cruised into the end zone for a 75 yard scoring run, tying the game
at 7-7.
The final quarter saw each team having opportunities to move the ball
but solid defense from both schools caused fumbles and interceptions,
stifling the Louisville and Weeping Water offenses, resulting in a 7-7
score at the end of regulation and setting up Johnson’s game winning
kick.
“Our defense played awesome!” said Louisville head coach Wally
Johnson, “Minus one breakdown early in the first, we played solid.
I could mention every kids’ name on our roster and tell you a way
that they contributed to this game. From defense to offense to special
teams, they all played solid.”
The Lions will now have two weeks to prepare for their next contest, an
October 12 game at Malcolm, who lost 14-12 at Palmyra Friday night. The
Clippers’ 1-5 record is deceiving, as the four losses to C-2 schools
came against teams that have a combined 16-5 record.
But for this weekend, the Lions football team and their fans will enjoy
this huge Homecoming win.
