Lions Bring Back Two Medals (9-8-11)

Dani Gennaro and Jeff Bishop earned medals for their performances at the Archbishop Bergan Invitational held at Camp Calvin Crest near Fremont.

Gennaro ran the course in a time of 20:25, just one second off her career best time, to place 13th in the field. Her efforts gave the senior her first medal in over a year. Sydney Stander finished just one place out of medal contention in a time of 20:36.

Bishop place 9th in a strong field of runners in a time of 21:53, almost 1:20 better then the time posted a week ago at Johnson County Central.

“We’ve been working on hills at practice on Tuesday,” said Bishop. “I think that made me a little stronger today. I was disappointed last week at JCC but I think I was more mentally prepared this week.” The Calvin Crest course features a hilly terrain and areas where footing is difficult.

Other varsity runners, with times and places included Vinnie Smejkal (24:03, 29), Andrew Sjogren (24:05, 31), Chris Van Horn (25:10, 42) and Lane Sladky (25:15, 44).

“The kids are getting back into form now,” said Lions head coach Matt Hammer. “Most of the kids improved their place from the week before, which is great, and our small team having two medalists is good. The next couple of weeks will be tough since we have two meets each of the next two weeks.”

Next Monday, the Lions travel to the Camp David for the Yutan Invitational before heading to Bennington Invite on Thursday. Both events begin at 4:30.
