Lion Defense Shoots Down Rockets (1-7-12)
Louisville girls 44, Syracuse 37

Louisville displayed a strong second-half defensive effort, leading to a 44-37 victory over the Syracuse Rockets.

The Rockets, who brought a 5-6 record into the contest, led throughout the early stages of the game. When Kendall Hallstrom hit a 3 from the top of the key with 5:28 remaining in the third quarter, Syracuse found theselves leading, 28-16.

But that basket proved to be the final Rocket field goal of the game as the Louisville defense shut out Syracuse from the field the final 13:24 of play while the Lions’ offense, feeding off the defensive intensity, began to roll.

Behind 28-16, Louisville went on a 15-2 run, taking their first lead of the game at 31-30 on two Morgan Dittberner free throws with 6:15 left in the game. A Natalie Minchow free throw and back-to-back buckets by sophomore Raegan Holl gave Louisville a six point lead at 36-30.

Syracuse got as close as 36-33 with 1:38 remaining in the game but Louisville’s Sydney Stander banked in a 3-pointer and the Lions drained 5-of-6 free throws in the final 44 seconds to secure the win.

“We did a better job in the second half on defense,” said a happy Wally Johnson, head coach of the Lions. “We took away their dribble-drive and that seemed to get us going.”

“At half-time, the coaches said we had to buckle down and work harder on defense,” said Dittberner. “ We figured out their offense, they were doing the same thing every time.”

With the win, the Lions improve their season record to 8-3 before hosting Fort Calhoun (4-7) on Tuesday for a 6:00 contest.

Buller Leads Syracuse to Win (1-7-12)
Syracuse 57, Louisville boys 37

Syracuse’s Micah Buller scored 23 points, leading the Rockets to a 57-37 victory over the visiting Louisville Lions.

Buller, a 6’ 1” senior, was 8-for-14 from the field, including five 3-pointers in eight attempts as the Rockets raise their season record to 3-9.

Louisville hung with the Rockets through the first quarter of play, even taking a brief lead when Jake Snodgrass’ bucket gave the Lions an 8-6 lead with 1:30 left in the first period.

But that was the only Lion lead as the Rockets took a 31-23 lead at the half then used a harassing 1-3-1 defense to pester the Louisville offense, at one time causing five straight turnovers midway through the final quarter.

Snodgrass topped all Louisville scorers with 10 points while Deloske adding eight.

Louisville (3-7) hosts Fort Calhoun (7-4) on Tuesday with varsity action scheduled to begin at 7:30.
