Defense Tough in 36-30 Win Over Platteview (12-22-11)
Louisville girls 36, Platteview 30 Louisville led from start to finish, defeating host Platteview, 36-30, to improve their season mark to 5-1 while the Trojans saw their record drop to 5-4. The Lions scored the first seven points of the game on a bucket by Sam Lane, a Natalie Minchow three-point play and a Sydney Stander field goal while the LHS defense did not allow a Trojan score for the first 4:23 of the contest. Platteview eventually settled down behind the play of freshman Kenzie Kulm, who scored eight of her 10 game points in the first half, but could get no closer then one point on two different instances, the last on a Sydney Feller free throw, tightening the score at 15-14 with one minute left before intermission. But Louisville’s Taylor Zaracki drained a 15 foot jumper two possessions later to give the Lions a 17-14 lead at the break. In the third period, Louisville was just 1-for-9 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, yet managed to extend their lead by holding the Trojans to only three points, taking a 21-17 lead into the fourth quarter. After trading baskets to open the final period, Louisville went on a 7-2 run on a Minchow free throw and field goal two possessions later then added two free throws apiece by Lane and Stander to take a 30-21 lead with 1:04 remaining. Platteview’s Feller, a 5’ 8” sophomore, scored 9 points in the final 49 seconds but the Lions’ Stander went 4-of-6 from the charity stripe and Zaracki hit both of her free throws during the span to seal the 36-30 win. “We were sloppy,” said LHS head coach Wally Johnson. “With the four-day break, we weren’t in our routine. We had a good start but nothing was smooth about this game.” “Natalie (Minchow) had a heck of a game,” continued Johnson. “In the second half, we recognized a mismatch and were able to get her the ball.” Minchow, a 5’ 11” senior, led all scorers with 15 points, nine of those in the final two periods, while corralling 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. “We did a tremendous job of stopping their pick and roll offense and our help-side defense was solid,” said Johnson. Platteview was averaging 42 points over their last three games. The Lions will take a five day NSAA moratorium break before returning to play at the Lincoln Lutheran Holiday Tournament next Thursday, December 29, facing the Fairbury Jeffs (3-3) at 2:30.
