Late Lion Bucket Earns Win (1-6-12)
Louisville boys 54, Palmyra 52

Colt Johannsen’s bucket at the buzzer gave the visiting Louisville Lions a 54-52 win over the Palmyra Panthers.

With the score tied with :08 seconds left in the game, the Lions took the ball the length of the court, getting the ball into the hands of point guard Skyler Deloske, who got into the lane before pitching the ball off to Johannsen for the game-winning shot.

“This feels great,” said Johannsen, a 6’ 2” sophomore forward. “This is a once in a lifetime experience. We did nothing different from what we’ve done in practice.”

“Four different Louisville players touched the ball in the final seconds,” said Lions’ head coach Colin Lansman. “They were all willing to share the rock.” After an LHS timeout, Jake Snodgrass started the game-winning play by passing the ball into Tucker Anderson, who found Deloske open at mid-court.

Earlier, it appeared that late game heroics wouldn’t be needed as Louisville held a 29-20 lead at the intermission and a 43-29 lead going into the final period.

But the pesky Panthers scored 14 straight points to open the fourth quarter, tying the game at 43-43 with 4:19 to play. The Lions managed to regain the lead, going ahead by as many as six points with 1:04 remaining at 51-45 before Palmyra made one final push, outscoring Louisville 7-1 in the final seconds to tie the game at 52 all before Johannsen’s buzzer beater.

“I’m happy for the win,” said Lansman after the court-side celebration. “But we lost the big lead and an opportunity to get a big win, one that would show that we’re a good team. We played so well earlier, especially on defense, but we stopped transitioning, stopped playing good defense and stood around on offense. We need to create a killer instinct.”

But a win is a win and the Lions will gladly take it, especially over an ECNC foe, improving their season mark to 3-6 while the Panthers fall to 1-9.

Louisville travels to Syracuse (2-9) on Saturday for a 4:30 varsity contest against the Rockets.

Lions Race to Big Win (1-6-12)
Louisville girls 58, Palmyra 32

The Louisville Lions improved to 7-3 on the season with a 58-32 victory over ECNC rival Palmyra on the Panthers’ home court.

The Lions broke to a 12-0 lead in the first 2:34 of the game, scoring on five of their first six possessions. Senior Taylor Zaracki and Morgan Ditteberner, a junior, led the outburst with five points apiece.

The Panthers got as close as seven points twice in the first half, the last time with 2:42 remaining in the half after Brittany Jones converted two free throws to make the score 26-19. But the Lions finished out the second quarter with a 7-0 run on a Raegan Holl free throw followed by a field goal just inside the arc and two Natalie Minchow buckets, the last on an offensive put back with five seconds remaining to make the score 33-19 at the break.

In the second half, the margin never dipped below 13 points and increased to 20 after a Dittberner drive to open the fourth quarter made the score 46-26. The Lions kept the pressure on the Panthers with the final score of 58-32 coming after a Mahlory Vice three-pointer nestled into the net.

Louisville was led in scoring by Minchow’s 13 points with Dittberner adding 12. Caitlin Petersen, Palmyra’s swift sophomore guard, topped Panther scorers with 10.

The Lions take to the road to face the Rockets of Syracuse (5-6) on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:45.
