Mustangs Take Title With 66-48 Win (12-30-11)
Raymond Central 66, Louisville girls 48

Raymond Central defeated Louisville, 66-48, in the championship game of the Lincoln Lutheran Holiday Basketball Tournament, improving their season mark to 7-2 while the Lions saw their record drop to 6-2.

The Mustangs started the game on fire, connecting on 8 of 21 field goal attempts, taking a 23-12 lead after one quarter of play. Karlee Haecker, a 5’ 5” sophomore guard, led the attack with seven of her team-high 17 points in the first eight minutes of play.

The Raymond Central offense continued to click in the second quarter, increasing their lead to 15 points at 34-19 before Morgan Dittberner buried a three-pointer and LeighAnn Novotney hit a free throw to decrease the Mustang lead to 11. But Raymond Central ended the half on a 11-0 run to enter the locker room with a comfortable 45-27 lead.

The Mustangs led by as many as 30 points late in the third period before settling for a 60-33 lead entering the final quarter.

That’s when the Lions made one final push for the win, going on a 9-0 run by scoring on their first four possessions to start the fourth period. Natalie Minchow started the streak with a bucket off a Dittberner assist, then hitting two free throw attempts on the next LHS possession. Dittberner then hit a trey from the right arc, followed by a bucket from point-blank after a Taylor Zaracki steal and assist to tighten the score at 60-42 with 6:46 remaining.

But Raymond Central, spearheaded by point guard Shanna Blazek, patiently ran their offense thereby limiting the number of LHS possessions as the Mustangs matched Louisville scoring the rest of the way, resulting in a 66-48 Mustang victory.

The Lions return home on Tuesday, January 3, hosting the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays (4-3) at 7:30. The girls jayvee game is set to begin at 6:00.

Jeffs Defeat Lions, 77-55 (12-30-11)
Fairbury 77, Louisville boys 55

Fairbury outscored Louisville 27-7 in the second quarter, providing a large part of the final difference in a 77-55 Jeffs victory in the consolation match-up of the Lincoln Lutheran Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Fairbury’s Clay Medina scored 10 of his game-high 20 points and Taylor Merchant threw in three 3s during the scoring explosion, leading the Jeffs to the huge 46-20 lead at the halftime break.

In the third period, Louisville’s Sam Long, a 6’ 5” senior center, led a Lion surge by scoring eight of his career high 16 points. When class mate Jake Snodgrass converted a conventional three-point play, Louisville found themselves down, 54-37 with 2:58 remaining in the third quarter.

But Medina, his twin brother Chad and Trent Simpson were too tough from inside and out the remainder of the game, not allowing the Lions to get any closer despite the efforts of Louisville’s Tucker Anderson and Zach Lutz who scored eight and six points, respectively, in the fourth quarter.

Louisville (2-6) returns to action on January 6, traveling to Palmyra (1-8) for a 7:45 varsity contest.
