LHS Improves to 9-3 With Win Over Pioneers (1-10-12)
Louisville girls 52, Fort Calhoun 50

Natalie Minchow dropped in two free throws with 12 seconds remaining, ensuring a Louisville Lions victory over the Fort Calhoun Pioneers, 52-50. The win upped Louisville’s record to 9-3 while Calhoun’s mark falls to 4-8.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair that saw three ties and four lead changes before the Pioneers scored the final four points of the period to take a 14-10 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

Louisville opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run featuring two press-break buckets by Carlee Derby, giving the Lions a 20-14 lead. The Pioneers fought back behind the play of Madie Nelson, a 5’ 4” guard, who scored nine second quarter points before teammate Meghan Schulz tied the game at the half, 28-28, with two free throws after being fouled at the buzzer.

The Lions took a lead they would not relinquish on their first possession of the second half when Morgan Dittberner buried a three, giving LHS a 31-28 lead. That trey was part of a 11 point third quarter surge by the 6’ 0” junior, out-dueling Fort Calhoun’s Maddie Westergard, a 6’ 2” center, who scored nine of her game high 23 points in the quarter as the Lions held a 44-40 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lions used tough defense to start the fourth quarter, holding Fort Calhoun scoreless on their first four possessions while Dittberner struck for two field goals wrapped around a Sam Lane put back to give the Lions what seemed to be a comfortable 50-40 lead, their largest of the night, with 5:32 to play.

But that was the final Louisville bucket of the game as the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run. When Angelica Zagata scored her only field goal of the night, Fort Calhoun found themselves behind 50-48 with 40 seconds left in the game.

The Pioneers had a chance to tie the game on their next possession but the errant shot was rebounded by Minchow, who was fouled on the play. Natalie’s free throws gave the Lions a four point lead making the final Meghan Schulz field goal, made just prior to the buzzer, irrelevant.

Dittberner led Louisville scorers with 17 points with Minchow recording another double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lions take on the East Butler Tigers (8-3) on Thursday with action set to begin at 6:00 in the Louisville gym.

Anderson, Snodgrass Lead Lions to Team Win (1-10-12)
Louisville boys 76, Fort Calhoun 61

Looking at the match-up before the tip-off, the odds of Louisville defeating Fort Calhoun were huge. The Pioneers came into the contest with a 7-4 record, easily beating, among others, Ashland-Greenwood, Platteview and Syracuse, three teams that the Lions had lost to by 14, 16, and 20 points, respectively, in a 3-7 season.

But on this night, the Lions put forth their best effort of the season, led by Tucker Anderson’s 25 points with Jake Snodgrass adding 21, as Louisville defeated the Pioneers by a score of 76-61. The point totals are career bests for the senior duo.

Anderson exploded for 10 points in the second period as the Lions took a 31-29 halftime lead, then extended the margin to as many as 15 points before the Pioneers ended the third quarter on a 5-0 run, while still trailing the Lions, 50-40.

In the fourth period, Fort Calhoun got as close as six points when Lucas Lazure scored on an offensive rebound with 2:41 remaining to tighten the score at 61-55.

But Skyler Deloske drained two free throws then hustled for a steal and lay-up to get the lead back to 10 points. Two Anderson free throws and another pair of free throws by Deloske had Lion fans breathing easier at 69-55. Snodgrass scored the final seven LHS points around two treys by Lazure to account for the 76-61 score.

“I have to compliment our guys on putting together their first complete game of the year,” said a happy Colin Lansman, head coach of the Lions. “Our effort on defense, our determination in the transition game, and our ability to convert in key situations at the free throw line was excellent to see.”

“This win should be a great confidence boost for our guys going forward,” continued Lansman. “We had great rebounding effort from Colt Johannsen and Jake Snodgrass, and our team is getting a lot better at sharing the ball. Skyler Deloske saw the floor very well with 7 assists. Tucker Anderson and Jake Snodgrass were able to get to the rim and lead us in scoring. Mitch Petersen and Zach Lutz provided some solid minutes on both ends of the court. While we are pleased with this win, no one on this team is satisfied. We are looking forward to a lot of upcoming games and we still have plenty to improve on.”

The big win, Louisville’s first home win since February 12, 2009, improves their record to 4-7 going into a Thursday home contest against East Butler (1-9) with tip-off anticipated at 7:30.
