Lions Bare Down, Beat Tigers (1-12-12)
Louisville boys 61, East Butler 50

Louisville improved their record to 5-7 with a 61-50 home-court victory over East Butler, who dropped to 1-10 on the year.

The LHS defense held the Tigers to just nine first half points on 3-of-23 (13%) shooting while jumping out to a 27-9 lead at the break. Louisville’s Jake Snodgrass scored 12 of his game high 16 points in the first two quarters to lead the Lions offense.

But the Tigers regrouped in the second half, making a game of it by starting the third quarter on a 16-4 run to tighten the score at 31-25. That’s when the Lions scored eight points on their next four trips down the court, seven of those coming from Mitch Petersen, as LHS built their lead back up to 14 points, 39-25.

In the fourth quarter, Louisville grew their lead back to 15 points after a field goal and a three-point play on back-to-back possessions by Sam Long, making the score 52-37 with 6:07 remaining.

East Butler managed to reduce the margin to nine after two foul shots by Andy Pierce made the score 54-45 with three minutes left but Colt Johannsen went 3-for-4 from the line and Skyler Deloske added four points on a field goal and two free throws to ward off any thoughts of a Tiger threat.

“We're happy to come away with a win tonight, but we sure had a poor defensive effort in the second half,” said Louisville head coach Colin Lansman. “We have got to be able to play smarter with a lead than we did. Mental mistakes on defense killed us and let Butler back in the game. I really would have liked to see our guys put the hammer down in the second half, but we didn't.”

“Ultimately, we made plays when we needed to and we'll take the victory,” said Lansman. “Jake Snodgrass led us tonight with 20 rebounds and 16 points. I cannot complement his effort and heart enough. I'm very proud of his leadership. I felt like Mitch Petersen hit a couple shots in key moments to ward off some of Butler's momentum. It continues to be a process and we will continue to improve.”

The Lions return to action on Saturday at Cedar Bluffs for a 2:45 match-up with the Wildcats.

Tigers Nip Lions, 56-55 (1-12-12)
East Butler 56, Louisville girls 55

East Butler’s Donnita Helman drove the length of the court for the game-winning lay-up, giving the visiting Tigers a 56-55 victory over the Louisville Lions.

Just seconds before, senior forward Natalie Minchow had given the Lions a temporary lead, converting two free throws with 15 ticks left on the clock.

But Helman, a second-team All-ECNC performer a year ago, dribbled through the Lion defense, making the driving lay-up with seven seconds left. The Tigers made the ensuing entry pass difficult, allowing only a desperation shot at the buzzer that fell short of the goal.

Throughout the game, each team traded punches, never allowing the other to gain more than a six point lead. Louisville twice had six point leads, the last at the 3:19 mark when Minchow hit a three-pointer from the left wing.

That’s when Helman took over, scoring all of the East Butler points during an 11-4 Tiger run, culminating with the winning lay-up and the one-point victory.

“Everybody in the gym new Helman was going to get the ball,” said LHS coach Wally Johnson. “It’s unfortunate someone had to lose that game and it’s unfortunate they had the ball at the end of the game with enough time to win it. I’m proud of the girls, that was a great game and a fun game to coach.”

The victory boosted East Butler’s record to 9-3 while the Lions’ season mark dropped to 9-4. Louisville takes to the road, traveling to Cedar Bluffs on Saturday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for 12:15.
