Lions Quick Start Defeats Cougars (12-1-11)

Louisville girls 52, Conestoga 37

Louisville outscored Conestoga 16-5 in the first quarter, setting the tone for a 52-37 victory over the Cougars on their home court.

Five different Lions entered the scoring column during the initial period, led by Sydney Stander who registered four of her career high 14 points during the early outburst. LHS took a 30-15 lead at halftime, then maintained the margin while cruising to the fifteen point win.

“Sydney had a good offensive performance tonight along with a good defensive effort from Taylor Zaracki and Jordyn Marcoe, who gave our team a great spark coming off the bench,” said Lions head coach Wally Johnson. Marcoe’s 10 points was a career high for the 5’11” junior.

Brooke Murdoch and Sydney Todd led the Cougar effort with 13 and 9 points, respectively.

Coach Johnson was happy with the Lions’ overall performance. “Not a bad way to start off the year,” said Johnson. “I was very pleased with our effort on both ends of the floor, we just need to clean things up and make some adjustments. I thought our defensive intensity was very good, and figuring out a rotation will definitely help the flow of the game. Every one of our kids contributed to this win and should be very proud of their performance.”

The Lions now focus their attention on Saturday’s trip to Omaha Brownell-Talbot where the Raiders host LHS for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

Lions Hang Tough, Get Win Over Cougars (12-1-11)

Louisville boys 54, Conestoga 48

Louisville used a strong, 17 point second quarter, turning a four point deficit into a three point halftime lead, then used a strong defensive effort in the second half to score a 54-48 victory over the Conestoga Cougars.

Mitch Petersen connected on two 3s and Skyler Deloske, a 5’ 8” sophomore guard, added five of his career high 14 points during the crucial period to lead the Lion attack.

With the 30-27 lead at the break, LHS turned to their defense to lock in the win. Louisville held Conestoga’s Stephen Flowers and Logan Wilsey, who registered 11 and 10 first-half points, respectively, to just four points apiece in the second half to finish off the victory.

“Very proud of our guys for dealing with adversity early on with foul trouble and falling beind by 7 out of the gate,” said Louisville head coach Colin Lansman. “Mitch Petersen and Josh Bouvier knocked down some shots at crucial moments to give us a lift. Sophomore point guard Skyler Deloske did a good job handling the ball for us the entire game and was pretty solid at the free throw line.”

Lansman was also impressed with the inside play of his team. “Excellent game by senior captain Jake Snodgrass on both ends of the floor. Jake proved tonight that he is a true leader for our team. Colt Johannsen and Sam Long battled all night and played with great effort.”

Next up for Louisville is a 5:45 contest at Brownell-Talbot on Saturday.
