Third Quarter is Difference in LHS Win (2-11-10)
Louisville girls 34, Weeping Water 31

Louisville outscored Weeping Water 15-7 in the third quarter, turning a three point half-time deficit into a 28-23 lead on the way to a 34-31 win over Weeping Water.

The Lions, after breaking out to a 10-8 lead in the first eight minutes of play, were held scoreless from the field in the second period by the Indians’ 1-3-1 zone defense. Louisville shot 0-9 from the field and turned the ball over six times as Weeping Water took a 16-13 lead into the locker room.

But junior forward Taylor Mohler’s long three-pointer 11 seconds into the second half tied the score, beginning the surge that saw the Lions outscore their hosts 15-7 in the quarter.

“Taylor hit a big shot to start the third quarter,” said Louisville head coach Wally Johnson. “I told her that, if left open, she should shoot the ball.”

“Coach said at half-time to shoot, so I did,” said a happy Mohler. The bomb was just the second successful three of her career.

The ECNC rivals traded leads until Louisville’s Morgan Dittberner hit a long field goal from the corner with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Lions a 20-19 lead they would not relinquish.

Weeping Water fell behind by as many as seven points but rallied to narrow the gap to a single point when Sydney Barrett drained one of two free throw with five minutes left in the game, making the score 28-27.

The Indians, who made 2-of-4 field goal attempts the rest of the game but went scoreless from the line on six attempts, could get no closer as the Lions used field goals by Tabby Gennaro and Kaitlin Coughlin combined with two free throws by Dittberner to pull off the 34-31 victory.

Dittberner led Louisville scorers with 10 points. Gennaro chipped in with eight points while Coughlin and Mohler added five points apiece. Senior guard Shelby Wipf topped all scorers, tallying 11 points in her final appearance on the Weeping Water hardwood.

“I’m proud of our effort,” said Coach Johnson. “Weeping Water is a good team that has beaten good teams. They had won six of their last nine, including Malcolm last week.”

“But now we’re starting over,” continued Johnson “ It’s a new season.” The Lions, who have won seven of their last nine games while improving to 9-11 on the year, begin sub-district play next Monday at Lincoln Christian, facing Malcolm at 7:00 pm.

Late Surge Leads to Lopsided WW Win (2-11-10)
Weeping Water 62, Louisville boys 49

Weeping Water outscored Louisville 26-8 over the final 12:21, turning a close game into a 62-49 win. The victory evened the Indians’ mark at 9-9 while the Lions dropped to 1-17.

The Indians took the lead for good when Fred Schneider, a 6’ 2” sophomore, connected on a jumper to make the score 10-8. Weeping Water continued to extend it’s lead, which reached a high mark after Austin Boyd converted an LHS turnover into a bucket, making the sore 34-19.

The Lions continued to work hard on both ends of the court, outscoring their hosts 17-7 over the next 5:44. When senior forward, DJ Hobbs hit from behind the arc, the Lions found themselves down by just five points at 41-36.

But Weeping Water ended the game with their monster 26-8 run led by Schneider, who registered seven of his 13 game points in the charge. Darren Mason topped all scorers, dropping in a game-high 16 points while junior Zach Miller tallied 10.

A pair of Lions scored in double figures with Daniel Studey scoring 13 and Hobbs kicking in 12 points.

Louisville will now wait a week until hosting Elmwood-Murdock next Friday, February 19, for a 7:30 contest.
