Lions Supply Knockout Punch to Mustangs, 45-36 (2-9-10)
Louisville girls 45, Raymond Central 36

Behind by nine points late in the first half, the Louisville Lions went on a 23-6 run over the next 12:43 to claim a 45-36 victory over Raymond Central on the Mustangs’ home court.

The rally began with 2:05 left in the first half when, with Louisville behind 20-11, freshman Morgan Dittberner converted a lay-up then dropped in a three-pointer two possessions later, pulling the Lions to within a manageable six points at the intermission, 22-16.

After the break, LHS continued the attack, knocking the Mustangs to the canvas by outscoring Raymond Central 12-4 in the third quarter. Five different Lions scored during the surge that saw Louisville tie the game on a Tabby Gennaro fifteen-footer, then take the lead for good, 28-26 entering the final quarter, on Maddie Drake’s only field goal of the game.

Louisville supplied the knockout punch by going on an 11-0 run in the first 2:21 of the fourth quarter, scoring on each of their first five possessions. Gennaro dropped in four free throws, Kaitlin Coughlin drained a trey, sophomore Natalie Minchow hit two charity tosses and Coughlin added another bucket, this one a twelve foot baseline jumper, pushing the Lions to their largest lead of the night at 39-28 with 5:21 remaining.

The Mustangs regrouped to outscore LHS, 8-6, the remainder of the game but it was too little, too late as the Lions claimed the 45-36 non-conference win. Louisville had two Lions in double-figure scoring with Gennaro recording 15 points and Coughlin adding 11. Raymond Central’s Liz Otto, a 5’ 11” sophomore, led all scorers with 17.

The Mustangs’ record falls to 2-15 with the Lions improving to 8-11 while avenging an earlier loss to Raymond Central during the holidays. Louisville will now turn their attention to Thursday when the Lions travel to take on ECNC foe, Weeping Water. Tip-off is set for 6:00.

Lions Lose to Mustangs in Overtime (2-9-10)
Raymond Central 52, Louisville boys 44

Raymond Central outscored visiting Louisville 10-2 in overtime, claiming a 52-44 victory over the Lions.

Louisville led throughout most of the game, including the half-time break at 19-15, largely through the efforts of senior center Adam Sparks, who scored nine first half points.

When the Mustangs’ Bo Prater popped in a three early in the third period, Raymond Central had their first lead of the game at 20-19. But the Lions answered on their next three possessions, going on a personal Daniel Studey 7-0 run to re-claim the lead, 26-20. The senior guard scored field goals on two drives and a 3-for-3 showing from the line.

The Mustangs outscored Louisville, 8-4, the remainder of the third quarter but the Lions still remained in the control, 30-28, entering the final period. But that changed quickly in the fourth period when Raymond Central scored the first nine points of the quarter, taking a 37-30 lead with 4:32 remaining.

The Lions regrouped and responded to the challenge by outscoring the Mustangs 12-5 in the next four minutes, including a DJ Hobbs three-pointer from the baseline to knot the score at 42-42 with 35 ticks left. Each team failed to score on their last possession in regulation as the score remained tied.

In overtime, Raymond Central’s Gideon Gillespie, who failed to score in regulation, recorded six points with Phil McNally adding four to his game high 23 points. Louisville did not add to their total until sophomore Jake Snodgrass tallied on a put-back with 28 seconds left.

Studey led Louisville scorers with a career-high 17 points, including an 8-for-8 performance from the line. Sparks was also in double figures with 14 points while DJ Hobbs pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Lions travel south to Weeping Water on Thursday for a 7:30 contest with the Indians who sport an 8-9 season record after a runner-up finish in last week’s ECNC tournament.
